In January of 2010, the Bee Vradenburg Foundation and the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado began the search for the first-ever winner of the Art Creates Community award for the Pikes Peak Region. Local non-profits were invited to submit an application for a $10,000 project award. The winner was then selected by the public from among the finalists chosen by the award panel. Many wonderful projects were submitted, making it a true honor for the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs and the Gospel Music Workshop of America project “Community in Unison: Concert & Volunteer Festival” to be selected as the winner.
On September 10, 2010, at First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Ave., Community in Unison will bring together a variety of community voices for an event that will be unlike any presented in Colorado Springs before. Patrons are urged to come at 5:30 to visit the Volunteer Festival. Talk with representatives from local non-profit organizations and discover how individuals can make a difference in our community.
The concert begins at 7:00 pm and will take the audience to new territory as they combine chamber music virtuosity with the explosive energy of a gospel choir in a concert of original arrangements of traditional spirituals and gospels. Additionally, Air Force Academy Band trumpet player Tim Allums will be a featured performer in the concert.
“The Gospel Music Workshop of America, Colorado Springs Chapter chorus has grown tremendously in the past few years, earning the praise and attention of Colorado Springs residents” states Chamber Orchestra Music Director Thomas Wilson. “It’s very important to me that the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, as a flagship of the arts in Colorado Springs, recognize their hard work and collaborate with them to create new musical possibilities for our city. That’s how our Community in Unison concert came about, and the people of Colorado Springs are obviously very excited about this possibility, as well. This will be a celebration of our city, its people, and the spirit of community that brings us together.
Tickets for Community in Unison are $10 for adults, $5 for students over 12, and 12 & under free (maximum two free 12 & under tickets with purchase of adult ticket.) Tickets are available online at www.chamberorchestraofthesprings., or contact chamorch@gmail., or call 719-633-3649.
