29th Season: 2012-2013

Season Premiere: Fanfare for a New Season
October 13  and 14
Pre-concert Lecture by Michael Grace

Karen Peace:  Forest Scenes (World Premiere)
Neruda:  Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major
     Manny Laureano, trumpet
Beethoven:  Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, op. 67

“The 29th season of the Chamber Orchestra opens in a special venue—Cornerstone Arts Center on the Colorado College Campus on homecoming weekend—with the brilliant trumpet sounds of Manny Laureano, Principal Trumpet of the Minnesota Orchestra and one of the most renowned trumpeters in the world today.  With a premiere of a new work by local composer Karen Peace and a soulful journey from darkness to light in Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra’s first performance in Cornerstone is a must-see event.”

Concert Program

Principal Trumpet Manny Laureano, who joined the Orchestra in 1981, has performed solos in all the Orchestra’s concert series and served as an assistant conductor during the 2005-06 season. In 2003 he premiered Stephen Paulus’ Concerto for Two Trumpets and Orchestra, which was written for him and Doc Severinsen, who was then the Orchestra’s principal pops conductor. His other solos with the Orchestra have included Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, Copland’s Quiet City, Clarke’s Southern Cross, Vizzutti’s Compadre, Hertel’s Concerto a cinque in D major, Bach’s Second Brandenburg Concerto, and concertos by Arutiunian and Tomasi.

Karen Peace holds an MS in Computer Information Systems, but music was her first love. She began composing seriously around 2006.  Since that time, she has composed numerous works for orchestra, chorus, and small ensemble, many of which can be heard on her website at www.soundclick.com/kepeaceusa.

“Creativity and reflection distinguish the Chamber Orchestra’s voyage to other worlds of music with special guest soloists Paul Nagem and Ian Buckspan.  Concertmaster Jacob Klock will give the local premiere of Max Reger’s haunting yet inspiring Hermit Playing the Violin.  From Mozart’s last concerto to the otherworldly strains of Corigliano and Brahms’ stunning Variations on a Theme of Haydn, this is the Chamber Orchestra’s most diverse offering all season.”

Concert Program
Shall We Dance
February 2 and 3
Pre-concert Lecture:  Tania Cronin

Copland:  Three Latin American Sketches
Barber:  Capricorn Concerto for Flute, Oboe, Trumpet & Strings
Debussy:  Danses sacrée et profane (Sacred and Profane Dances)

The Chamber Orchestra takes the dance floor with some outstanding soloists from the orchestra and a special guest performance by emerging harp artist Matthew Tutsky. The world of dance unfolds with colorful music by leading composers and the local premiere of Ney Rosauro’s dramatic marimba concerto. This is a rare opportunity to catch  rising new talent, and you may have to resist the temptation to dance in the aisles.

Hausmusik
Fortunes
February 23 and 24
Pre-concert Lecture:  Jeanna Wearing

Daugherty:  My Fortune
Bloch:  Concerto Grosso No. 2
     Hausmusik
Mozart:  Symphony No. 36 in C Major, K.425 “Linz”

Hausmusik, our colleagues in bringing exciting chamber music to Colorado Springs, join us for Ernst Bloch’s Second Concerto Grosso, following on the heels of the Chamber Orchestra’s riveting performance of Bloch’s First Concerto Grosso in Season 28.  The fortunes of the two organizations intersect in their mission to reach the broadest possible audience.  Music of fortune rounds out the program, including Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony, written in just four days on a travel respite when the people of Linz realized that the great composer was visiting their town and demanded a concert.”

Concert Program
Season Finale: The Promise of Spring
April 27 and 28
Pre-concert Lecture:  Chuck Cabell

Chopin:  Piano Concerto No. 1 in in E Minor, op. 11
     Michael Cheung, piano
Mahler:  Blumine
Sibelius:  Symphony No. 3 in C, op. 524

Promise abounds with pianist Michael Cheung, 2011 winner of the Amateur Pianists International competition, and Chopin’s First Piano Concerto.  Mahler’s “Blumine,” written as part of his First Symphony and later discarded to conform to traditional four-movement form, gets a rare performance.  The season ends with the neo-Classical, joyous, and triumphant strains of Sibelius’ Third Symphony—and unusual side of the Finnish composer at a pivotal moment in his creative development.
