FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 420 N Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903 Pre-concert talk with Donald Zimmerman, D.M.A., Music Director, Immanuel Lutheran Church, begins 45 minutes prior to the performance Joseph Rheinberger Organ Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, op. 177 Carol Wilson, organ Francis Poulenc Organ Concerto in G Minor Simon Jacobs, organ Michael Daugherty Once Upon a Castle Dr. Joseph Galema, organ The Chamber Orchestra’s 2019-2020 season opens with an exotic trip through Germany and France, ending at the mysterious Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California--home of Charles Foster Kane of Citizen Kane fame. Simon Jacobs, the new Music Director at Grace Episcopal Church, makes his solo debut with the Chamber Orchestra while longtime friends Carol Wilson and Dr. Joseph Galema return for a powerful and diverse program. The local premiere of Michael Daugherty’s Once Upon a Castle rounds out the program with a mind-boggling tour of Hearst Castle’s Neptune Pool and opulent parties in the Xanadu style, with a nod to Citizen Kane’s famous “Rosebud.” |

Timothy Hsu, Concertmaster of the Pueblo Symphony and Artist-in-Residence at Colorado State University-Pueblo, sings from the highest altitudes in Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending. This will be one of the best collaborative performances all season. |

In addition to diverse music from Mendelssohn, Mozart and a newcomer to the Chamber Orchestra, Jessie Montgomery, the orchestra presents another world premiere featuring Susan Grace and Glen Whitehead--a brand new concerto for trumpet and piano by George Lewis. This will be a fun, adventurous weekend. |

Young musicians through recent college graduates will compete for an opportunity to solo with the orchestra here in beautiful Colorado Springs, giving us the opportunity to meet one of the music world’s emerging artists. Adding firepower to a spectacular weekend is UCCS’s Colin McAlister, playing a charming and exciting guitar concerto by Richard Harvey that will be a thrill to new listeners, while the Chamber Orchestra rounds out the program in more familiar territory--Haydn’s humorous and quirky “Clock” Symphony. |

Bach and Telemann provide more familiar fare, while Elisa brings us a stunning and overlooked violin concerto by Johan Helmich Roman. Frank Martin’s Baroque-inspired Petite Symphonie Concertante bridges musical ideas across centuries to end the concert on an exciting high note. |

Audience favorite Jacob Klock brings his astonishingly diverse talents--even his fiddling!--to an uniquely exciting performance of Brahms’ Violin Concerto, while Mendelssohn’s Second Symphony ends the orchestra’s tour of his symphony cycle. Under the surface is a second theme--strong women--with the astonishing music of overlooked composer Louise Farrenc and Beethoven’s exciting tale of Leonore, who risked everything to free her husband. It’s a triumphant finale to an exceptional season. |
