Musicians, educators, dancers, actors and visual artists are invited to participate in a free interdisciplinary creative experience featuring Soundpainting, a multidisciplinary live composing sign language. The Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, the Visual and Performing Arts Department, and the Music Program at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs will be hosting two Soundpainting - A Language for Creativity workshops led by the creator of Soundpainting, Walter Thompson, on Saturday, March 5, from 10AM to 5PM, and Sunday, March 6 from 2- 5PM. Workshops will be held at the Upper Lodge, 1420 Austin Bluffs Dr. 80918 on the UCCS campus. No prior experience is needed to learn the Soundpainting sign language. Workshops are intended for adults, college-age and older.
The Saturday workshop is an in-depth exploration of the Soundpainting scheduled from 10 AM to 5 PM with a break for lunch. During the workshop, each participant will learn the basic 44 gestures as a performer and also as a Soundpainter – a composer in real time. They will learn what each gesture means, how to play it and how to sign it. After completing the first 44 gestures, participants will continue learning and expanding their vocabulary and begin exploring live composition concepts with the Soundpainting language. Participants are invited to come in the morning and stay as long as they can.
The Sunday 2-5PM workshop will provide a basic introduction to the techniques and will allow participants to begin exploring possibilities. Though the Soundpainting language may incorporate improvisation, a previous knowledge of improvisation is not required. Musicians, dancers, actors and visual artists equally work together in the same group. Participants need to bring their instruments. Dancers and actors are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing. Sessions can be videotaped for private use.
