Frankenstein

A New Opera by Gregg Kallor

Opera 2030’s next production will explore Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s timeless classic: Frankenstein – a novel that, to this day, speaks to something fundamental about human nature.

Frankenstein is a horror story, but not in the way people often think. The real horror is the agony of a living being who is callously abandoned by the one who created him. Alienated and persecuted, this creature’s tragic existence is a stark reminder of the urgent need for empathy.

So, who is the monster: a creature who is “other” — or the person who can’t see past this difference, and acts hatefully?

Music, libretto, and notes by Gregg Kallor.

Kallor achieved a perfect balance of text and music. There is plenty of heartfelt lyricism in his music, yet also enough complexity to keep it intriguing for those of us who seek more.
